Chateau la Roque still bears evidence of its medieval past; its ramparts,
ditches, the door of the drawbridge with the "mâchicoulis", loop-holes, ... are
a testament to its past as a medieval defensive site. It was, in fact, a
fortress with 4 watch towers from which to survey and protect the area, the
castle, village and its people. The towers were razed in the 12th century by
order of the King of France, to avoid providing refuge not potential rebels. The
castle then became the property of St. Siege during the Papal presence in
Avignon until the 14th Century, and later was claimed by the lords of La Roque
sur Pernes.
Below the Chateau lies the village of la Roque sur Pernes. With its 11th Century
church, tiered houses, narrow, age-old lanes and fountain it is a site full of
charm and poetry which is guaranteed to enchant you...
Chateau la Roque is a private residence. Its offer 3 beautiful suites and 2
deluxe rooms, all with private baths and views of the surrounding valley.
Each suite and room is individually decorated with Provencal furniture and
accessories, in a refined, understated style, and all rooms overlook the
landscaped gardens.
